About Fort Hardy Park
Fort Hardy Park has a long history of being a place where people gather. It’s centrally located within the Village of Schuylerville and is a natural hub of activity.
Only at Fort Hardy Park can visitors go to the Champlain Canal Region Visitor’s Center, get the background on the American Revolution and Champlain Canal, then step out the door to continue their journey by foot, bicycle, boat, or car.
Learn about the area’s history at the Champlain Canal Region Gateway Visitors Center (28 Ferry Street), established by the Historic Hudson Hoosic Rivers Partnership (HHHRP) and managed by Hudson Crossing Park. Open Thursday through Sunday, 11 am until 4 pm until October 31st (winter hours TBA).
The Visitors Center has a public restroom and free Wi-Fi hotspot.
Adjacent to Fort Hardy Park is the Champlain Canalway Trail and Old Champlain Canal Towpath, the designated trailhead to walking and hiking on the 750-mile Empire State Trail. The trail connects Fort Hardy Park to the historic Schuyler House (a 10-minute walk north) and Hudson Crossing Park (a 25-minute walk south).
Visitors to the park enjoy a shaded picnic area with several tables, benches, and grills.
Fort Hardy Park’s playground equipment and Little Lending Library are located next to the Schuylerville Youth Center which has two covered pavilions and provides afterschool and summer programs.
There are seven Little League fields where Old Saratoga Athletic Association (OSAA) baseball, softball, and football games are played, and a basketball court. In the winter, free public ice skating is available at the court ice rink, when conditions allow.
The Park’s 37.5 acres of open lawn and woodland forest is sandwiched between the Champlain Canal and a 14-mile stretch of the Hudson River praised for its visual interest and oftentimes challenging currents. Fed by the nearby Battenkill River and Fish Creek, it is situated between Canal Locks 4 and 5 (located in Stillwater and Hudson Crossing Park, respectively).
The Schuylerville Beach (3 Ferry Street) and the Schuylerville Boat Ramp (Reds Road), are designated stops on the New York State Canalway Water Trail. Catch and release fishing is permitted. Within Fort Hardy Park is a waterfront gazebo and a 250-ft riverside boardwalk. The Park is also home to The Turning Point Rowing Club’s storage, docking area, and kayak launch site.
The Park Bathhouse is open 6am-7pm seven days/week. There are three dog walking stations, a bicycle repair stop, and a basketball court. The park has limited handicap accessibility, 149 spaces of free public parking, and is open to the public 24/7.
The historic Schuyler House is only a short walk away.
